For over a decade, the generosity of PATCO riders and the kindness of officers with the Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) have put a smile on countless children’s faces during the holiday season.
The FOP Lodge 30 of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, which represents the men and women of the Delaware River Port Authority Police Department, hosts their annual toy drive beginning in November.
For several weeks, donation bins are placed in PATCO train stations from Ferry Avenue to Lindenwold. The riders of the High Speedline graciously purchase various toys and place them in the bins during their commute.
Once the drive ends, the donated toys are collected and brought to Holy Name School in Camden, New Jersey for a special day for all the students.
Approximately 150 students in kindergarten through eighth grade are able to enjoy pizza and ice cream treats, all served by DRPA officers who volunteer their time off-duty.
As part of the day’s festivities, every student is able to select a donated toy. In addition, the big man himself, Santa Claus, stops by and spends time with the children.
The donated toys are also used throughout the holiday season to lift the spirits of families that have fallen on hard times. Furthermore, in years past the toys have been donated to youth organizations throughout South Jersey, as well as replacing a stolen Toys for Toys bin from a local business.
Thank you for supporting this great cause.
