This morning's power outage temporarily suspended PATCO train service. To keep riders informed, we are sharing more details about what occurred, how crews responded, and the steps taken to restore service as quickly and safely as possible.
At approximately 7:40 a.m., a power surge from PSE&G caused several fuses to blow at PATCO's Westmont Substation, disrupting power and halting train operations. PSE&G determined the surge was the result of an accident in Cherry Hill. The fuses operated as designed, stopping the surge from entering PATCO's system and protecting critical components, including train traction motors, signaling systems, automated train control, and other key electrical infrastructure.
PATCO had enough power to safely recall trains between stations to the nearest platforms, allowing passengers to exit safely and avoid being stranded on stopped trains.
PATCO diagnostic crews were dispatched immediately, identified the issue, and coordinated with PSE&G and PATCO repair crews to complete repairs. Spare fuses were already stored inside the Westmont Substation, allowing crews to replace the damaged components right away. In addition, PATCO's Lindenwold Maintenance Facility maintains a fully stocked storeroom with thousands of critical parts for trains, tracks, power systems, and other infrastructure that keep PATCO moving every day. With PATCO having these parts on hand, both on-site and in storage, crews could make repairs quickly, eliminating delays associated with sourcing materials from outside vendors or distant locations.
Power was restored, and train service resumed at approximately 10:15 a.m.
Throughout the interruption, NJ TRANSIT bus routes cross-honored PATCO fares. NJ TRANSIT also operated a special shuttle bus service, making stops at all New Jersey PATCO stations and 8th & Market in Philadelphia to assist riders.
