New PATCO Schedule Starts September 1: Overnight Weekday Closures Expand Systemwide

Stations and service will close weeknights 12 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. to allow for deep cleanings and maintenance work

Beginning Monday, September 1, PATCO will introduce a new schedule as it moves into Phase 2 of its temporary overnight weekday service changes. During this phase, trains will not operate between 12 a.m. and 4:30 a.m., Monday through Friday. The last train each weeknight will depart at 11:30 p.m., with service resuming at 4:30 a.m. All stations and concourse areas will be closed during this time. Weekend overnight service remains unchanged.

Key Details for Riders:

  • When: Weeknight Owl Service, 12 a.m. to 4:30 a.m., beginning September 1
  • First Weekday Train: 4:30 a.m. daily
  • Last Weekday Train: 11:30 p.m. nightly
  • Stations: All PATCO stations and concourses will be closed during the weekday overnight hours
  • Duration: Phase 2 is a six-month pilot program that will continue through March 2026.

The overnight closures were first announced in June as part of a phased rollout to address safety and cleanliness concerns, improve conditions for staff, and provide a better overall experience for transit riders. Phase 1, which began earlier this summer, included rotating station closures with trains operating every two hours overnight. With that phase complete, Phase 2 expands the closure to the entire line, giving crews additional time and space to carry out systemwide maintenance.

Ridership during these overnight hours is very low, averaging just 25 riders per hour. By scheduling closures when demand is lightest, PATCO is able to minimize customer impact while maximizing progress on systemwide improvements.

During the overnight closure, crews will complete projects that are challenging to perform while trains are operating. This includes track, electrical, and signal work that requires direct access to the rails. The closure period also provides time for deep cleaning activities that cannot occur when stations are open to the public, such as using large water tanks on the tracks to pressure wash Philadelphia stations. These rider-free windows allow the system to be fully reset each night in preparation for the morning commute.

"These weekday overnight suspensions give our crews the time and space to work safely and get more done," said John D. Rink, PATCO General Manager. "Phase 2 allows us to keep improving the system so riders benefit from a renewed and refreshed commute each day."

PATCO appreciates its riders' patience and understanding as this phased effort moves forward. These overnight closures are an important investment in delivering a cleaner, safer, and more reliable commute-renewed and refreshed for riders every morning.

PATCO encourages riders to check schedules before traveling during overnight hours by visiting RidePATCO.org or following PATCO on social media.
