Ben Franklin Bridge Track Rehabilitation Project

In mid-January 2014, PATCO trains began running on new schedules designed to accommodate a two-year, $103 million track rehabilitation project on the Benjamin Franklin Bridge.

The project consists of replacing the entire track system on the Ben Franklin Bridge, replacing railroad systems and performing structural rehabilitation to keep the PATCO system in good repair.

Combined with the Transit Car Overhaul Project that is underway, when these projects are complete, passengers will ride PATCO on new tracks in refurbished cars on a renewed system.

What's Being Replaced?

A significant number of system elements will be replaced, including:
  • 33 miles of signal, power and communications cable
  • 80 new signal, communication and electrical enclosures
  • 8,878 bridge timber ties and 6 miles of welded rails will be replaced
  • 180 tons of new steel will be used in the rehabilitation
  • 1,300 feet of new rail in the camden yard will be installed

The Challenges

The competing priorities of providing safe and reliable service to our customers and the need to complete the track replacement project in a timely manner will unfortunately result in service delays and crowded trains. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience during this project.
