PATCO News & Information

Released:1/12/2017

January 12 Morning Rush Hour Incident Information

On Thursday, January 12 at 8:12 a.m., a westbound train experienced smoke coming from underneath while at the Ferry Avenue Station platform. Passengers disembarked, the train was placed out of service and the track's third rail power was turned off. An empty train was dispatched directly to Ferry Avenue for displaced passengers. The replacement train arrived at 15/16th & Locust approximately 19 minutes later without incident. Other trains continued with service and single-tracked around the disabled train resulting in 15-20 minute delays in each direction. An emergency schedule with trains running every 15 minutes was placed in effect after the morning rush until the disabled train could be moved to the Lindenwold Yard Maintenance Facility. Normal service resumed with the 2 p.m. out of Lindenwold and the 2:08 p.m. out of 15/16th & Locust.

The cause of the equipment failure was a blown traction motor. Winter weather has a harsh effect on rail cars and impacts may be felt several days after a snow storm. Snow and moisture can work their way into traction motors, a key part of every train’s propulsion system, causing them to short out. Repairs to the motor are underway.
