What do the New York Times, the City of Philadelphia, LaSalle University and Miracle Whip all have in common? They are among the first to advertise on the newly installed digital monitors at PATCO’s 8th & Market Streets Station. The station is equipped with four, 52 inch digital monitors, located at the platform level. The monitors display advertisements as well as weather, PATCO news and information.
The installation is part of an aggressive advertising campaign started in 2008, when PATCO contracted with TITAN, the largest transit advertising company in the North America, to manage its advertising. In 2009, after just one year, PATCO generated $430,000 in advertising revenue up from the $70,000 generated the previous year.
In addition to the digital monitors, PATCO offers a number of different media forms including seat-back displays, exclusive advertising for an entire station, platform posters, banners and trestles, interior and exterior train wraps and interior car cards.
“We are committed to finding new ways to generate revenue,” says DRPA CEO and PATCO President John J. Matheussen. “The monitors broaden our opportunity for revenue generation as we can display multiple messages versus the traditional static sign.”
“In addition to advertising, the digital monitors also give us the ability to communicate service-related messages directly to our customers,” says Assistant General Manager Cheryl Spicer.
In addition to PATCO, the Delaware River Port Authority owns and operates the Benjamin Franklin, Walt Whitman, Commodore Barry and Betsy Ross bridges. It also owns and operates the RiverLink Ferry and Philadelphia Cruise Terminal.
