Federal Cap on Tax Deferred Transit Benefits Increased to $240

Transit users who enroll in transit benefit programs through their employers can enjoy greater tax savings in 2013.  The monthly cap on the amount of income that can be designated tax-deferred under these programs has increased from $125 to $240.

Many PATCO passengers pay $6 or less for their daily commute. The increase in the monthly cap to $240 will benefit those PATCO passengers whose daily transit costs include more than one ride each way.  For example, a PATCO rider transferring onto many of SEPTA's lines can purchase his/her daily round-trip SEPTA ticket from the PATCO vending machine in New Jersey using monies loaded onto a FREEDOM card. 

PATCO passengers can load transit benefits onto their FREEDOM cards in several ways:

1. Vouchers can be added to a FREEDOM card at the FREEDOM Card Service Center any weekday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. 
2. Vouchers can be mailed to the FREEDOM Card Service Center at 100 South Broadway, Camden, NJ 08103.
3. Transit benefit debit cards can be used to load value onto a FREEDOM card on-line at www.patcofreedomcard.org or at PATCO vending machines.
4. Benefits can be loaded electronically.  For example, employers who work with DVRPC's transit benefit program (www.RideECO.org) and certain other administrators can have their employees' transit benefit loaded directly onto the FREEDOM card, maximizing convenience for PATCO riders.

PATCO passengers who are interested in taking advantage in the increased cap should contact their employer.
