PATCO Recognized For Its Freedom Card

The Smart Card Alliance, at its Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida, recognized PATCO’S FREEDOM Card as an example of how best to institute a fare collection program. For the first time the Alliance established a runner-up category, and PATCO was selected to receive the “2008 Outstanding Smart Card Achievement Runner Up Award.” First place went to the U.S. General Services Administration for its role in personalizing and issuing the federal government’s Personal Identity Verification Cards. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority received Honorable Mention for its Charlie Card Program. PATCO President, John J. Matheussen, says “this type of national recognition is well deserved and shows the thought and preparation that went into launching the FREEDOM Card Program.” PATCO General Manager, Bob Box, says “this program has been extremely popular with our customers and we thank the Smart Card Alliance for the recognition.” The Smart Card Alliance is a non-profit multi-industry association working to stimulate the understanding, adoption, use, and widespread application of smart card technology. Through specific projects such as education programs, market research, advocacy, industry relations and open forums, the Alliance keeps its members connected to industry leaders and innovative thought. The Delaware River Port Authority is a regional transportation agency. In addition to PATCO, the DRPA owns and operates the Benjamin Franklin, Walt Whitman, Commodore Barry and Betsy Ross Bridges, the Philadelphia Cruise Terminal and the RiverLink Ferry.
