The PATCO High Speed Line’s ongoing interlocking and roadbed rehabilitation project is coming to the Haddonfield area starting the weekend of August 18 and will last approximately five weeks. Work will take place in the vicinity of the following streets; Upland Way, Concord Circle, Concord Drive, Oak Ridge Drive, Penn Brook Drive and Ridgewood Circle. Workers will be removing the existing switches, some dating back to PATCO’s opening in 1969, and replacing them with more durable switches. In addition, workers will be replacing joints with continuously welded rail and resurfacing the track bed. This work will reduce maintenance and improve ride quality.
Work is expected to be performed weeknights from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. Monday through Thursday; and on weekends from 10 p.m. Friday, through 4 a.m. Monday. Residents of the streets mentioned above can expect to hear sounds coming from the equipment used in replacing the existing rail with the new rail and with work being done in conjunction with excavation for new utilities. The majority of the sound levels are comparable to a PATCO train passing at low speed. However, there will be durations where the sound of rail cutting will be more pronounced during the first part of the weekend.
In addition, workers on the line and train operators will be following “stop and proceed” rules for project safety. This requires the train operator to sound a horn as the train approaches the construction area to make workers aware of the train’s approach. In response, the workers will blow a short air horn signal letting the train operator know that the line has been cleared and it is safe for the train to proceed. The train operator will sound the horn one last time to acknowledge that the signal was received.

In addition to the PATCO High Speed Line, the Delaware River Port Authority owns and operates the Benjamin Franklin, Walt Whitman, Commodore Barry and Betsy Ross bridges. It also owns and operates the RiverLink Ferry and Philadelphia Cruise Terminal at Pier.
